Update: I'm so ignorant. I had no idea that the moving force behind Mothers' Day in the US was not Hallmark but Anna Reeve Jarvis's Mothers' Day Work Clubs and Julia Ward Howe's call for a Mothers' Day for Peace. Of course, It was not until clothing merchant John Wanamaker got on board that the idea, stripped of its activist and pacifist origins, got official recognition, but so it goes.
