The Thought Police Serve and Protect Us

The US State Department canceled the visa of Professor John Milios of Greece, preventing him from attending a conference on "How Class Works" at SUNY Stonybrook's Center for the Study of Working Class Life last week. Milios was detained for hours upon his arrival at JFK, questioned about his political beliefs, and sent back to Greece.
Inside Higher Ed. has the story here. Milios's email describing the event to the organizers of the conference can be found at Mark Crispin Miller's site here. A statement by Michael Zweig, Director of the Center for the Study of Working Class Life and organizer of the conference, can also be found at the link above, and in .pdf form here. An open letter of concern to Condoleeza Rice from Jonathan Knight, Director of the American Association of University Professors' Program in Academic Freedom and Tenure is here.
